BIDEN ADMINISTRATION GREENLIGHTS SOLAR EXPANSION ON 31 MILLION ACRES OF PUBLIC LANDS
In a landmark move towards a cleaner and more sustainable future, the Biden administration has announced the finalization of an ambitious plan aimed at significantly expanding solar energy production on federal lands. This update to the Western Solar Plan will increase the development of solar power facilities across 31 million acres of public lands in 11 western states, up from the initial recommendation of 22 million acres across six states.
Rooted in the progressive Investing in America agenda, this initiative seeks not only to enhance infrastructure and drive economic growth through clean energy and job creation investments, but also modernize our energy industry in alignment with present socio-environmental realities and the future's demands.
Besides providing a platform for mass-scale solar development, the strategic positioning of the now-permissible lands mitigates environmental concerns by placing solar farms closer to transmission lines and ensuring certain lands and wildlife habitats maintain their protected status.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has already exceeded its target, granting permits for over 29 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy projects on public lands, surpassing its goal of 25 GW by a significant margin. This amount of green energy is capable of powering more than 12 million households, indicating a trend towards wide-scale adoption of renewable sources in the American electricity landscape.
Despite these fruitful initial efforts, the goal is set even higher. The Biden administration targets a grid that operates on 100% clean electricity by 2035, symbolizing a radical shift from America's traditional reliance on fossil fuels. A hint of this residual, fossil fuels-driven paradigm remains, as the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) underscores that fossil fuels can still tap into over 80 million acres of public land, dwarfing the land set aside for solar.
Looking to expedite these transformational clean energy projects before the November elections, the administration is making strides to streamline federal permitting processes. However, as part of a balanced strategy that recognizes the importance of environmental care and public opinion, proposed projects must still undergo site-specific environmental review and public comment.
